Model 1036 Floor Lamp by Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce, 1940s

A rare floor lamp designed by Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce, produced in Milan between 1946 and 1948.

The composition is defined by a dramatically elongated brass arm balanced by a suspended brass counterweight, creating a precise equilibrium between mass, tension, and movement. At the center of the structure, a spherical Carrara marble joint acts as both pivot and visual fulcrum, connecting the different elements into a dynamic architectural composition.

The lenticular Carrara marble base anchors the lamp while introducing a refined contrast between stone and metal. At the opposite end, an adjustable lacquered aluminum reflector extends into space, giving the piece a light and aerodynamic presence.

Every element serves both a structural and visual purpose. The long diagonal axis generates a strong spatial gesture, transforming the lamp into a sculptural object that continuously changes appearance depending on the viewpoint.

The brass surfaces retain their original patina, with natural oxidation and signs of age that emphasize the authenticity and historical character of the piece. The reflector also presents minor marks and surface variations consistent with decades of use.

Widely regarded as one of Sarfatti's most sophisticated early designs, model 1036 exemplifies the designer's exploration of balance, engineering, and sculptural form during the formative years of Italian postwar modernism.
