Set of 8 "969" Volute Chairs for the VI Triennale by Gio Ponti, Montina, 1970s

A set of eight "969" Volute chairs originally designed by Gio Ponti for the VI Triennale di Milano in 1936 and reissued by Montina in the 1970s.

The chairs are executed in solid beech with curved plywood backrests, defined by a light and open structure. The design creates a measured rhythm, balancing sculptural gesture with structural clarity.

The backrests trace a fluid, calligraphic line, introducing movement while maintaining a precise architectural presence. The cut-out form enhances the relationship between solid elements and voids.

The frames are set with subtle inward tensions, giving the composition a sense of lightness while preserving stability. A small triangular wooden detail at the front of the seat recalls Ponti's Superleggera, reinforcing continuity within his design language.

The wood surfaces show natural grain and tonal variation. Traces of restoration remain visible, including filled areas and slight irregularities, contributing to the material depth of the pieces.

The seats have been reupholstered in an off-white semi-velvet fabric, with renewed padding to ensure comfort while respecting the original proportions.

A cohesive set where proportion, line, and structure resolve into a balanced form.
